UV Stabiliser and Absorber Masterbatches

Extend the life time of polymers in outdoor use with the addition of UV stabiliser systems, protect packaged products from UV damage using UV absorber systems.

Protecting against damage from UV radiation.

Wells have created a range of UV stabilisers, to protect polymeric materials, and UV absorbers to protect packaged materials from UV light degradation. Wells UV stabiliser and absorber masterbatches can be custom formulated to suit specific applications or polymer types. Combination masterbatches containing both a stabiliser and an absorber are available.

How it works.

A common class of UV stabilisers are the hindered amine light stabiliser (HALS) systems. These work by interrupting the photo-degradation process before it can get destructively underway, thus protecting the polymer and extending the service life of the part. The mechanisms by which they achieve this used include “free radical scavenging” and “peroxide decomposition”.

Wells UV absorber masterbatches contain an active ingredient system which ‘absorbs’ UV radiation. Due to the presence of double bonds within its molecular structure, it is able to absorb light energy in the UV region and re-emit the energy in the IR region. This system prevents UV radiation from passing through the packaging material and reaching the contents inside.

Wells UV stabilisers are used in wide ranging areas including:

Blow moulding – Water butts, Tanks, Planters, Tubs

Injection Moulding – Garden furniture.

Film and profile – greenhouses, pallet covers, pipes

Fibres – nonwovens, artificial grass

Applications: Blown film, Cast Film, BOPP, Sheet Extrusion, Profile Extrusion, Blow Moulding, Injection Moulding, Nonwovens and Fibre

Polymer Carriers Available: PE, PP, PA, PET

UV absorbers are used in many packaging applications:

Packaging films – pallet covers, shrink films

Injection moulded (PP, PS and PET) pots, tubs and lids.

Blow moulded HDPE bottles, jars and drums.

Thermoformed , PP and PET trays

Applications: Blown film, Cast Film, BOPP, Sheet Extrusion, Profile Extrusion, Blow Moulding, Injection Moulding, Nonwovens and Fibre

Polymer Carriers Available: PE, PP, PA, PET’

Wells Plastics Founded

The business was founded in 1984 by Danny Wells servicing the UK with specialist additive masterbatches for the UK film and fibre marketplace, with a particular expertise in UV masterbatches.

New Management

In 1997 Danny left the business, under new management the product range began to grow.

Bactiglas™ Launches

In 1999 the business entered antimicrobial masterbatch marketplace which would become the Bactiglas™ range of products.

Reverte™ Arrives

In 2003 Wells developed a range of oxo-biodegradable masterbatches which would become the Reverte™ range of products in 2005.

In 2006 the business began its first site expansion taking on more warehousing and office space on the same industrial estate, including an expansion of the lab facility to support the growing business.

Growing Team

In 2009 the

Technical Department expanded further

Management Buy Out

In 2011 KCP supported a management buy-out and provided investment for growth

International Growth

In 2012 Wells increased dramatically its international foot print through an expanded distribution network.

Founding Members

In 2015 Wells are the founding Member of the oxo-biodegradable plastics federation (now known as the Society of Biodegradable Polymers)

Capacity Increases

In 2018 the business underwent a significant capacity uplift with a 40% expansion and extension of the current production facility

ISO 14001

In 2019 the business achieved ISO 14001

Ecovadis Silver

In 2020 Wells achieve a Silver EcoVadis rating

A Busy Year

In 2022 Wells created the Innovation Centre, a raw material warehouse, gained a Gold Ecovadis rating and completed a Management Buy Out
